We are pleased to announce that the SheROX Triathlon Series has once again partnered with the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF) which will serve as the Official Charitable Partner of the 2012 SheROX Triathlon Series. OCRF is the largest private philanthropy in the U.S., dedicated exclusively to funding ovarian cancer research. OCRF’s mission is to find a method of early detection and ultimately a cure for ovarian cancer.
Recently, OCRF awarded $5.4 million in grants for ovarian cancer research in 2012. Click here to read more about these exciting grants.
Each year, 200,000 women are diagnosed worldwide with ovarian cancer and 125,000 die from this disease. In the U.S., ovarian cancer accounts for more deaths than all other gynecologic cancers combined and is the 5th leading cause of cancer death among women. If detected and treated early, the five-year survival rate increases from 45% to greater than 92%, but there is currently no effective means of early detection.
Since 1998, OCRF has invested nearly $40 million in the best, most promising ovarian cancer research. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, OCRF sponsored scientists are developing innovative strategies for early detection; exploring the genetics that increase risk for ovarian cancer; understanding the underlying molecular biology of the disease; identifying new and better targets for treatment; and deciphering how and why ovarian cancer spreads, and how to stop it.
Team Hope is a group of women who, in addition to training for a SheROX triathlon, have committed to raising funds to support OCRF. Team Hope offers all SheROX participants the opportunity to support the work of OCRF. Click here to learn more about Team Hope!
